What is tree pruning?

Tree Pruning is the generic term for the various methods of selective removal of branches on a tree. This can be for a variety of different reasons, such as to reduce a tree’s size; to remove damaged or dead branches; or to thin out the crown and tidy up the tree’s aesthetic appearance.

Tree pruning in our experience most commonly involves turning a monster tree into something a little less oppressive that will boost the sunlight levels in your house and garden.

Tree pruning can be broken down into three more specific elements of arboriculture, namely, Crown Lifting, Crown Thinning and Crown Reduction.

Crown Lifting is the removal of the lowest branches, and is an effective method of increasing light levels to areas closer to the tree or to enable access under the crown.

Crown Thinning is the removal of smaller / tertiary branches, usually towards the outer portion of the crown, with the aim of allowing light and wind to pass more freely through the tree’s canopy / crown.

Crown Reduction is the reduction in height and/or spread of the crown (the foliage bearing portions) of a tree, with the aim of reducing mechanical stress on individual branches or the whole tree; making the tree more suited to its immediate environment; or reducing the effects of shading and light loss.

Eucalyptus Tree Pruning in Cheshire

This eucalyptus tree in Lymm recently had a substantial limb tear out over the roadside. Our client wanted us to deal with that and reduce the rest of the tree to prevent any more of the main branches from failing. We reduced a lot of weight from each section, bringing the height down, but also tried to leave it looking natural. The client absolutely loves the tree and wanted to keep it safe and healthy for as long as possible. This was the result:

Training: Tree pruning in Preston requires more than simply chopping down branches from a tree. Tree pruning that has been completed without a deeper understanding of tree biology can lead to irreversible tree damage and a reduction of its lifespan.
Don’t Remove the Collar: When pruning a tree you should always avoid pruning in to the tree collar. The tree collar is the area where branches attach to the tree. Cutting past the branch collar will prevent the tree from compartmentalising adequately, causing decay which will spread further into the tree.

The client loves the tree but it was starting to block out a lot of light to the front of the house, and similarly to the front rooms in their neighbour’s house. We recommended a crown lift, crown thin and a sympathetic crown reduction, and this is what one of our professional tree surgeon teams was able to achieve – more light, whilst retaining the tree’s aesthetic structure, form and grace.
